As a pro-crypto state, Louisiana passed a landmark Bitcoin bill in June and has now introduced the option for residents to pay for a variety of state services using cryptocurrency. By leveraging secure, private crypto wallets, citizens can now engage more easily with state services.
State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., hailed this transition as a key milestone in the state's adoption of progressive technologies. “This is more than just a technological leap. We’re giving our citizens greater flexibility and autonomy in how they manage their interactions with the state,” Fleming stated.
The first crypto transaction was made with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, ushering in a new era for state government payments.

Fleming emphasized that Louisiana's crypto payment system is designed to mitigate the volatility commonly associated with digital currencies. Currently, the state accepts Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Lightning, and USD Coin (USDC), with all payments automatically converted to U.S. dollars. This process ensures that the state remains protected from fluctuations in cryptocurrency prices.
In addition, Louisiana remains firm in its opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Governor Jeff Landry recently signed legislation banning CBDCs in the state, solidifying Louisiana’s commitment to Bitcoin self-custody and decentralized financial solutions.
